A mixed-media exhibition by Alan Rogers of new work inspired by Venice.
Central to Alan’s thinking is the idea of the democratic city inspired by Jacopo de Barbari’s ‘Venetie’ woodcut map from 1500, the writing of Michel de Certeau, Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ and contemporary art practitioners involved with ‘walking as practice’. His particular interest is in what he calls ‘the spaces in-between’: the plethora of flyers, advertisements and graffiti covering every small space between buildings: on drainpipes, gas supply covers, overhead beams and disused window shutters. This is a Venetian ‘intranet’, revealing countless stories of struggle, ambition and dreams, should we know how to read it.
During his residency over the last 3 months at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Alan has been using a variety of methodology and materials to document unique, focused ‘mytho-geographical’ walks within the boundaries of Venice and the lagoon. There’s a research-based blog that accompanies this work, which is a deliberately disorderly mix of fact, fiction and fantasy, compiled from personal observation, hearsay, and a variety of historical and poetic sources.

Alan Rogers is a UK-Italy based multi-media artist working with paint, collage, print, sound, light and installation. He is Executive Director of b-side: http://b-side.org.uk/ and a visiting lecturer on the BA (Hons) Creative Arts Management course at Arts University Bournemouth. He was the Cultural Coordinator for the ‘Maritime Mix’ program at the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Events. The thing that links all this various and diverse work together is ‘site’ or ‘sense of place’. Alan’s work as both an artist and arts organizer is site-specific and site-responsive.
