Breaking the Ice
Jorg will be coming to Venice to support Professor Denker’s seminars on the History of Printmaking Techniques with practical demonstrations on April 11th, 13th, and 14th. During his stay, he will exhibit some of his works in SG Gallery. This is not his first time in Venice, as he stayed here about 40 years ago, and he intends to take this opportunity to create some new works inspired by the city.
Born in 1942, Jorg studied in both Germany and Japan, and the influence of the Far East is still evident in his works. The engravings he will present at the Scuola are inspired by recent travels to Japan and Antarctica. Their expressive strength comes from the ancient, centuries-old tradition they draw upon, combined with a new and experimental use of etching. These works, which convey a sense of something ancient and eternal, are also fully immersed in the spirit of the twenty-first century.
Ice, icebergs, traditional Japanese buildings, as well as all the themes Jorg has touched on during his career (monuments, landscapes, figures, and shells), aim to reveal what lies beneath physical appearance. Jorg is not just an engraver: after serving as the Director of Graphic Arts at the Canberra School of Art for twenty years, he is now a professor at the Kyoto City University of Arts. He has held over 150 solo exhibitions worldwide, and many of his works are part of collections at the Australian National Gallery, the British Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Known as an artist, he is also highly respected as a teacher, draftsman, and graphic designer.
