‘SEMINAL’ showcases, alongside the book “Ca ‘de Janas” by Maria Lai, the works of 6 artists on which this work has had a profound influential impact.
Maria Lai created the artist’s book “Ca ‘de Janas” in 1996 in the print studio of the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, where alongside Matilde Dolcetti she experimented with printmaking for the first time.
Alongside this work, books made by the artists, Loretta Cappanera, Matilde Dolcetti, Déirdre Kelly. Lia Malformoni, Stefania Missio, Bruna Zamana are on display.
Despite the impact of the digital world on our ability to consume images, the power of the individual image to affect and influence is reflected in the works of these artists.
The Scuola has always had a particular love for artist’s books, and a long history of artists, who have taught in the studio, beginning in 1987 with Bertrand Dorny, professor at the Beaux Arts, Paris, who was the first to structure a real didactic program in this discipline.
“Ca ‘de Janas” by Maria Lai is part of the extensive “Artists Books Collection” of the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, which has recently been cataloged, and includes more than 800 books made at the studio during the courses, as well as numerous other donations from International artists.
