Il tema dell’atmosfera nell’arte di oggi
La Venezia che vediamo oggi è il risultato di sovrapposizioni di secoli. Pur non potendo prescindere dalla storia vi è una Venezia dei fenomeni, che percepiamo solamente coi nostri sensi. Fra gli attributi fisici della città, l’acqua è la più esplorata. La vediamo insinuarsi nella città ad illuminare o riflettere tutte le strutture che si specchiano in essa. Circonda Venezia con la sua laguna e ci costringe entro una rete di piccole isole.
La presenza dell’aria è altrettanto particolare. Quando abbiamo modo non solo di vedere, ma anche di respirare, assaporare ed anche toccare l’ambiente attraverso la nebbia e l’umidità, l’immateriale si trasforma in fisico e noi siamo costretti a ripensare le cose visibili e non viste, tangibili ed eteree.
Prendendo spunto dall’umidità e dal particolare ambiente veneziano, il Worskop tratterà tecniche, media e idee legati all’uso dell’atmosfera nella pittura di oggi. Ci riferiremo ad artisti per cui l’atmosfera, o la sua assenza, riveste un particolare ruolo creativo. Sebbene i materiali e le strategie che utilizziamo possano essere utilizzati in vista di una quantità di stili e generi pittorici, nel corso del seminario ci concentreremo su mezzi minimalisti e non figurativi, al fine di poter verificare a breve il risultato del nostro lavoro. Le dimostrazioni comprenderanno l’acquerello, l’acrilico e l’olio con modifiche a cera, nonché il disegno a pastello e carboncino.

The issue of atmosphere in art-making today
The Venice we see today is an archeology of centuries intermingled. History is almost inescapable here; but there is also a phenomenal Venice, one that we experience entirely through our senses, fleetingly separate from historic association. Of the city’s physical attributes, water is likely most often addressed. We find it channeling through the city’s passageways, illuminating or reflecting adjacent structures along the way. It encircles Venice in the form of a lagoon, and restricts us to dwell upon a network of tiny islands. Equally remarkable is its presence in the air. When, on occasion, we can not only see, but also breathe, taste and touch the environment via nebulous humidity, we find the immaterial rendered physical, and we are challenged to rethink our understanding of things visible and unseen, tangible and ethereal.
Drawing from the humidity and peculiar ambience of Venice, this workshop will present techniques, media and ideas behind the use of atmosphere in painting today. We will look at contemporary artists for whom atmosphere–or its absence–plays a creative role. While the materials and strategies we employ may be used toward a variety of painting styles and genres, we will focus on minimalist and non-objective terms for the seminar in order to quickly see the results of our work. Demonstrations will involve watercolor, acrylic, and oil paint with wax modifiers, as well as chalk-pastel drawing. Subsequent work-periods will give participants a chance to explore some of the techniques and concepts presented.
